Euroforest take all aspects of health & safety and environmental protection seriously. As the original business has developed and expanded over the last decade to now consisting of six forestry related group businesses, the compliance team has grown accordingly. Euroforest have invested heavily in this compliance team in recent years to ensure we deliver an industry leading high-quality service. As a result, the compliance team have increased from one part time position to three fulltime compliance officers with dedicated administrative support.
To reflect the broad range of business activity across the UK, Euroforest have strategically positioned the compliance team to ensure we have members of staff covering all geographical areas. Simon Wallis, Head of Compliance, who has been with Euroforest since 2017 is based in Central Scotland. Mark Tansley who has been with the business for 3 years is based in Southern England. Daniel Burns who has recently joined the business in early 2021 is based at Head Office. The compliance team are supported by Wendy Cairns who is based at our head office at Carlisle.
A brief summary of the team members are detailed below.
Simon joined Euroforest in September 2017 as our first fulltime compliance manager, having previously been engaged on a contract basis whilst running his own consultancy business. He started his career as a Chainsaw Operator in Thetford Forest and has previously worked for the Forestry Commission as Head of Technical Training and Forestry England as Assistant Harvesting and Marketing Officer.
Simon holds a BSc (hons) in Forestry and a NEBOSH General Certificate. He has also been a Technical Verifier, Assessor and Trainer for both NPTC (C&G) and Lantra.
Simon is focussed on developing a positive health and safety culture across our industry and ensuring that Euroforest continues to develop practical solutions that provide meaningful solutions to the problems facing our operators and managers on a daily basis.
Mark joined Euroforest in 2019 as the Compliance Officer for England and Wales, drawn by the opportunity to raise safety standards of forestry operations across the industry. Mark is responsible for providing technical advice, support, and training to operational managers across the Euroforest Group. Mark is also co-chair of the FISA Worksite Management working group who create tools, methods and guidance for commissioning and managing forestry worksites.
Mark has many years of experience working in forestry having started as a Chainsaw operator in 1996. Since then, he has worked in several forestry related roles as a tree climber, arboriculture consultant, lecturer, FC Technical Trainer, Area Forester, and as an expert witness in serious incident investigations for the HSE. Mark has gained numerous qualifications during this time including a National General Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety (NEBOSH), a National Diploma in Forestry, a Technicians Certification in Arboriculture, and a Certificate in Further Education and Training (CertEd).
Mark continues to have a passion for forestry and is particularly interested in forest operations safety standards, chainsaw operations, work at height and environmental management. If you wish to contact Mark, please get in touch using the details above.
Daniel joined the Euroforest compliance team in early 2021 having worked with Forestry England for more than a decade, where he built up a broad and varied range of experience. He was a Beat Forester for more than six years in his previous role covering the Salcey Forest area in Northamptonshire.
Daniel has multiple professional qualifications from a FdSc in Forestry, a BSc in Environmental Science, and is a Chartered Forester. He joined Euroforest in the role of Quality and Certification Manager to support and develop our ISO, FSC and PEFC certification processes. He came to Euroforest seeking a fresh challenge and wanting to be part of a growing and dynamic business.
Daniel is passionate about multipurpose foresting, growing high quality timber products, whilst enhancing the environment and providing safe employment in this sustainable industry.
Wendy joined Euroforest in October 2018 as maternity cover for the Office Administrator but was hired permanently as a Compliance Administrator in October 2019. Her role includes overseeing setup of new staff and existing managers on our internal digital filing system called Harvesting Manager. She is also involved with checking compliance and use of our internal reporting and supervision software, i-Auditor and our lone working software, Trackplot.
Wendy reports from a compliance perspective on any corrective actions, accidents, and near misses involving contracts and minutes monthly Health, Safety and Environmental meetings for the group of companies. She also checks harvesting contract compliance and monitors haulier overloading which she reports on monthly as well as circulating safety alerts to hauliers and contractors when necessary.
Wendy has 27 years of experience in office administration, 14 years of which were spent working with HMRC. She has worked within HR, Finance and has experience as a secretary and PA. Wendy has an SVQ Level 3 in Office Administration and recently completed her Level 4 Business Administration Advanced qualification where she achieved a higher distinction. She also has a Higher qualification relating to producing complex business documents and is about to start working on an Intermediate Excel Course.
Wendy enjoys a varied work style, and finds no two days are ever the same within her role.
