I have experienced the positive impact that forestry can have on society all through my life having grown up in Scotland in the villages of Glentrool and Ae, both of which were built by the Forestry Commission to house rural workers. I worked for Forestry England for twelve years, six of which as a Beat Forester, before joining the private sector where I was seeking new opportunities and challenges. Euroforest offered this opportunity to join their compliance team based in the Carlisle office. A key factor in my decision to join Euroforest was the strong reputation and admirable traits of Simon Wallis, the compliance manager, whose team I was to join. Since then, I have found he is not alone in this; Euroforest is comprised of people who work hard, treat each other fairly, and understand the true value of teamwork.
What do I do?
My role is to ensure the Euroforest Group of Businesses remain fully compliant with international industry standards and regulations, including maintaining the group’s certifications for ISO and FSC. I also undertake a variety of other tasks from producing compliance documentation, providing training and mentoring, undertaking auditing, and providing internal guidance in relation to group safety meetings. I have now been with the business for just under a year, and I continue to take great satisfaction in working with my colleagues across the group to ensure all our forestry operations are professionally managed.
A day in the life…
It’s fair to say no two days are ever the same, and my working week varies significantly. I travel across the UK and Ireland providing support to our teams in their operational delivery. This involves looking at contract paperwork, discussing industry best practices, visiting forestry sites, and speaking with contractors and operators to enable Euroforest to deliver timber products to market and allow us to offer forest owners a high-quality service.
Euroforest and the compliance team give me the freedom to manage my own schedule and working day. This ensures I am able to spend the necessary time I need to do my job correctly irrespective of the task in hand. The company and my colleagues in the compliance team have been great at offering training and advise since I started. My job has taken me to some wonderful places, and I am proud to be part of an industry leading compliance team.
