Euroforest were delighted to welcome Sam Walker last week as our second work experience student. Sam spent the week with Nathaniel Callaghan, Euroforest’s Trainee Manager for North Yorkshire where he gained a comprehensive insight into the range of forestry services we undertake. Sam accompanied Nathaniel to several harvesting sites including a softwood thinning, hardwood clearfell, and an infected Larch site which required skyline extraction. This allowed him to gain experience across abroad spectrum of harvesting operations.
Over the week Sam was introduced to the basics of forestry harvesting and timber marketing through the day-to-day onsite activities. He experienced all stages of the harvesting process from meeting with land agents for initial discussions, visiting a site in the consultation stage prior to harvesting, and witnessing a site completion. Sam was introduced to a range of harvesting methods and the different machinery used on site and was given a detailed tour of a forwarder. As well as visiting traditional harvesting sites, Sam accompanied Nathaniel to an infected Larch site where he met contractors from H & S Timber who gave him a rundown of the practicalities of the skyline operations which were taking place.
In addition to the practical elements of the role, Sam was introduced to the administrative duties including site monitoring, organising haulage, and pricing jobs competitively with sawmills and private customers.
