Utilising Rail for the Transportation of Timber in the Southwest

Douglas King & Sam Hawkey, Area Managers for the Southwest of England, in partnership with Pontrilas Sawmills is trialing the transporting of logs utilising rail from Newton Abbot train station in Devon to Abergavenny train station in Monmouthshire.  From here, the logs will be uplifted by Pontrilas Haulage and delivered to Pontrilas Sawmill near Hereford.

Utilising rail creates additional resources for mobilising timber whilst reducing the number of timber lorries on the roads.  Approximately 400 tonnes of locally grown timber will be transported in one journey during this exercise, a greener alternative to using roads in the long-distance movement of timber.  If successful, the rail movement will be a great addition to the haulage companies who support our timber movements in the Southwest, allowing us to increase timber mobilisation from this area whilst maximising our clients return.
